I can't find any info on this like year s of manufacture or production numbers. I know Winchester often made special runs for groups or distributors.

The early XTR's were uncheckered, at least on the 9422s. The XTR designation was applied to several models including shotguns and as mentioned above, was supposed to indicate a nicer level of finish on both wood and metal.
