Firstly Lament has a very poor time tracking on to the enemy. Often swings just go through or past the enemy, catapulting you out of range. This in itself makes it very hard to use. But more importantly, the whole damage calculation is bugged. Even if you hit the enemy and the damage numbers pop up, it deals less damage than shown.

Any loadout or weapons that you can freeze, slow, blind and so on is great. The Lament has intrinsic Anti-Barrier. I prefer my Shadebinder with Osmiomancy Gloves with Bleak Watcher because I can freeze and slow enemies so it's much more safe to get near the enemies and use the sword.
